Work-Life-Balance has become a buzzword. But what does it need to be able to keep a healthy balance between work and private life? Do we live to work or do we work to live?

Self-esteem and work

Being able to work seems to be self-evident for the most of us. This resembles the situation of being healthy. Only the ones who are, or have been, sick can really appreciate good health. Having no work can decrease our self-esteem and our social status. This explains why the demands we have concerning a new position decrease proportionally with the increase of the duration of unemployment.

Between force and freedom of choice

And yet many people tend to experience work as something one is forced to do. Where do these expressions come from as „Monday Blues“ and “I have to go to work.”? Actually we have a choice. Nobody really has to work. Nobody really has to pay rent and taxes. Whoever prefers not to be visited by a liquidator or spend time in prison can go to work and earn money for his/her livelihood. We can define the amount of work by our efforts and our attitude to life.

Being aware of workload

If the workload becomes too high there can be grave consequences: Burn-out-Syndrome, social isolation, addiction and health problems. For this reason one should take discontentment seriously when work and private life are out of balance. Do you sometimes ask yourself why your job is not as great as you imagined it to be? It may sound polemical, but a job is like a pair of trousers. If they do not fit anymore one has to readjust them: either you readjust your trousers, or you loose weight or you throw your trousers away and buy a pair of new ones.

A matter of balance

The way out of this dilemma goes from heteronomy to autonomy. Take time for analyses of your situation. Note your wishes and priorities. This helps you to keep track of your goals, especially if your circumstances change. Career planning is worthwile and leads to more success and satisfaction in your job. Talk to people you trust or your recruitment consultant about your professional goals. Observe the way you behave. Perhaps you will discover what a famous philosopher has said:
