Online Application – work quickly but carefully
It is becoming more and more common to apply for a job online rather than sending an application by regular mail. The advantages of online applications are obvious. They are faster and less complicated.
The format of your files
Different users use different tools. For this reason your documents should be comprehensible for most platforms and should be able to be opened and read without too much effort (as for instance having to install additional software). Next to the Microsoft Word format the PDF (Portable Document Format) is the format which is most used in the world of business.
Keep it short and simple
Your documents shouldn’t be larger than 1 Megabyte. Don’t add more than three files to your application (cover letter, CV and certificates of employment). Give these files a corresponding name. Should your documents be larger than 1 MB, enclose them all in a collective file. Don’t forget to add a photo to your CV.
The application form
Application forms convey information in a structured form. For this reason they are very popular. Fill in all boxes of the form. As the space of these boxes is very limited, you should consider carefully which information you want to give. Usually you can add files containing further documents at the end of the questionnaire.
Another type of online application is applying by e-mail. Choose a meaningful title for the reference box of your e-mail and refer to the reference number mentioned in the vacancy description. Try to find out the name of the person in charge of the human resources department and his/her favoured e-mail address.
Check preferences
Your IT resource recruitment consultant prefers online applications. This doesn’t have to be the case for other firms. Should you be unsure how to apply, make a phone call and ask for advice.
